I don't know if I will buy a car for my children when they get old enough to drive. I worked to buy my first car and it meant more to me because of this I think. What's your opinion on this?

i got my mom's old car when i started driving and then as a graduation present from high school i got a newer car, it was not brand new but it was new to me. I won't be buying a car for my son when he graduates he will have to earn it.

You were lucky to have that start by your mum. Thanks for your comment. I agree with you.

I would have my child earn their own money to buy a car. It's a big responsablity, not a toy. They need to earn this, in my opinion. I may help a little though.

I think it's good to teach them responsibility by making them help at least to buy something that expensive. They may look after it better because of this.

I think it is up to the parent whether to buy their child a car, I don't see any right or wrong in it! I went halves with my ex and bought my son a car for his 18th. Mind you the car cost $3000 so nothing fancy, but it was a good car and then he traded it in after saving while working and bought himself a bit better one. As for my daughter she bought herself one from money received through an accident. So whew, saved there! lol But her 18th gift was just as costly! he he

At least you gave your son a start. I'm sure he appreciated it. Thanks for your response.

I think just buying a child a car because you can or because they want one is a mistake. Making them help you pay for it, or paying for the gas, or paying for the insurance would help. Anything you get for free tends to have less value than something you've worked really hard to acquire.

True. I think children appreciate things more when they help pay for them.

If I can affod it I would buy my children cars once they get their licence. Everybody should have the luxury of having their parents buy them a car. I didn't have that luxury but I will deffinatly give it to my children. The only thing is that they will have to keep it up. If they decide not to take care of their car then they are out of luck.

I didn't actually buy a car for my children, but I loaned them the money to purchase one. This was for my own benefit as well as their's, as it meant I didn't have to drive them to and from work. I must say, that when they got their new cars, they treasured them and took very good care of them, and they have also paid me back in full.

I would love to be able to do this for my children. I have a few years yet so it may still happen.
