What dress do you chic girls prefer in winters to look cool and stylish?

I am not having a very good sense of dressing and usually prefer good jackets or those old classic long coats. But beyong that if I wear something else I seem to be out of color. Even with jackets and coats i always mix the wrong colors while dressing. I think most of you smart girls and women must know a way to this problem?
