The British Character

The English are a heterogeneous
and contradictory race
with conservative tendencies.
While progress is the aim of every Englishman,
he nevertheless distrusts and resents change.
When he goes to bed he insists
that his mattress shall be supported by a symphony
of springs
that is the newest world in comfort
but when he awakes up in the morning
he requires that the view from his bedroom window
shall be the same as it was as it was yesterday
and for centuries of yesterdays before that.
Thus it is that Great Britain is a land
in which the past is always becoming present,
in which history is part of the picture of to-day,
and thus it is that Great Britain has become a storehouse of treasure
that is both the work of nature and the work of man.

I agree to your comments, yes they're pretty challenging people to work or move around with ;) he expects everything from everyone but won't express it in his entire lifetime. they like hanging on to their past 'cos it gives them an extra high! but once he leaves his shores it's a complete u-turn.
Thanks
