Overseas jobs: spouse having to be away for years in order to earn.

For some this can not be helped. Life at home is just so terrible that we feel it's better to go overseas. How far can we sacrifice other family and personal needs just for the sake or earning money? 4-year contract, 2 months vac.
What is the best arrangement you find acceptable?
