I moved to Thailand 2 years ago. It has been an exciting adventure and I would love to hear more about your experience during your travels here. I decided to make Thailand my permanent home. After you have visited all the tourist traps, and have seen the Northern mountains, the Eastern temples, the Southern islands, and have had a taste of the shopping and nightlife in Bangkok, most foreigners who decide to stay head for the locals only spots where we are free from tourists and all the things that follow them where ever they go. It is vital if you want to experience true Thai culture and not just the places that have been exploited by tourism that you do not just go out and purchase a guide book and follow the itinerary without any of your own creativity involved. Don't get me wrong, it is tourism that brought me here, and it is tourism that feeds the economy.. but anyone who can appreciate a locals approach and view of Thailand should take the time to find the places that only a local would recommend you visit. Please, if found a great guesthouse, beach bungalow, or mountain trek that is far away from the hot spots that is worthy of a visit, let us know!

I am so jealous! I would love to love to Thailand, though to be honest I know very little about it. Is there much area that is less densely populated? What is the current political climate there?

Cliff, I am originally from Calgary Alberta Canada. I return ever so often to visit family and loved ones, but I would never return to life in North America. I love it here. Where else in the world can you fill out a few online surveys and forms every month, and have enough money to pay all of your bills, travel expenses, rent food, etc. and even bank some savings. The culture and the people just make sense to me. It is my new home. Thanks for the question... and nice Racoon by the way.... :)
