One person told me bluntly that I was not creative. It kinda hit a nerve. I thought it was just an awful atempt to be funny/cute. But the encoutner got me thinking...how can we tell whether a person is creative or not?

first things first, i think it is an awful thing to say that to someone whether it's a joke or not. there is creativity in everyone, only it is manifested in different ways. with regard to your question of how we can tell whether a person is creative or not, i think there's no way to measure that because it's something which is somehow dependent on individual perception as well. while it is true that some of us are good in the things that people usually consider as art--like painting, sculpting, or writing, and some of us are good in other stuff that are not usually regarded as artsy but nevertheless require creative thinking like cooking (think iron chef) or teaching (of course!), half of it would still depend on how people react to it.i mean, what is the definition of "good" anyway? nirvana's screeching music may be a creative expression of their emotions and their millions of fans but it may be a load of crap to others. my ex was totally amazed with the paintings of this certain artist but i honestly thought they looked like children's drawing and and my 9-year old cousin could probably make better pictures. as a writer in our college paper there were times when i thought i have written something spectacular that my editor had trashed. so i say we are all creative. it's just that people see our creativity in many different ways.

I believe that creativity comes from deep inside each of us, and it isn't necessarily a crafty or artsy thing, some people are really creative solving problems but can't draw or paint, some people are creative in wit and humor, others may be creative in decorating, so I think every one has some measure of creativity in them, sometimes it not really evident until you get to know someone well, and other times it's immediately recognizable. I think maybe we "squash" a lot creativity in children because we try to compartmentalize their expressions into specific areas that we define instead of letting them define themselves, if you know what I mean. So I for me it's don't judge the book but the cover. :)

Creative to me means being able to come up with something original, unique, or imaginative. I truly believe we all have something we are good at, or interested in, and that would be what our creative side would excel in. Just because we are not creative in one subject, does not mean we can't be in another.
