Red heads in mexico?

United States

Good evening. Wanted to bouce something off you guys. A year or two ago, while traveling in southern Texas, my family was planning a day trip into Mexico. When we happened to mention that to a waitress in Texas, she grabbed me by the shoulders and said, "OH MY GOD, you hold on to her and watch her closley." She was pointing to my red-headed daughter. She went on to say, "they'll take her." While in Mexico the next day, I watched the faces of the locals and sure enough, they stared and gawked and literally followed us at times. We have our first Mexican restaurant in our small town and it is staffed by Mexicans. When we go in to eat, it is a repeat of what happened in Mexico. The male waiters will literally hide behind a partition and stare at her. It is creepy. Can you guys tell me, what is the deal? Why? I've never heard this and it is creepy!

First of all I would like to thank you because now I can say I learned something new today! I have never in my life heard of this. I have heard of people rubbing the head of a person with red hair for luck, but nothing like this. That would make me paranoid!

Ive never heard of this before and I am mexican descent and never seen this before. As a matter of fact I have a red head half sister and red head nieces that live in Mexico and I never saw this before. I tried looking at snopes and see if there was any reference to such thing, and I was not able to. I know that in Mexico, redheads have a name, I cant recall what it is. Maybe somebody else here can shed light for you.

I have red hair and been to Mexico repeatedly. I've never had this problem. Maybe it's the area but I have no clue. I've been to Cazumela and that area of Mexico, perhaps they are more used to seeing people with red hair. I don't know but I think it's a bit bizarre that it happened that way to you. I know here in Florida I've never had a problem with people staring at my hair and we have plenty of Mexicans here.

Well I've never heard anything about it. It is quite interesting though. Maybe it has to do with some mexican folk lore or something...??? I did a search and couldn't find anything at all.

Wow, what an experience. If I was your daughter and have any plans for a future visit there, I would run and pick up a box of "Preference by Loreal" first.
