I have a 1989 dodge dakota pickup 6 cyl auto that in spite of a complete tuneup with plug wire change and all. I changed the fuel filter closest to the rear of the vehicle (the larger one), but didn't change the one toward the front of the vehicle. I am wondering what to do, should I suspect a fuel filter problem, or is it possibly something more sinister such as a fuel pump?

Replace the heli(spelling) pickup (electronic points) in the distributor. It fixed my 89 Ramcharger and my sister-in-laws Dakota that was on the side of the road. priced around $30.oo.

It very well could be your fuel pump...Believe it or not, the easiet way I have found out if it was my fuel pump or not, I would knock on my pump and listen for the sound...if when you knock on the pump and it sounds hollow then it is most likely your pump, if it doesn't sound hollow, then it is most likely something else... Can you restart right away? Or do you need to sit for a while first? Have you checked the connection on your altenator? or Your starter? Check all of that before you deciede to replace a fuel pump, cause I know they are not cheap...Unless you do it yourself, which can be very very messy, especiallly if you have a full tank of gas
