How do I get over the fear of water?

January 9, 2007 4:58am CST
I am now 29years going on 30 and I can't swim. When I was about 11 years old, I was not afraid. A friend and I went out to an apartment complex swimming pool, and he was teaching me to swim. As I was laying parallel to the water, he was holding me from underneath, and without telling me he let go. I almost drowned. Since then I have been afraid to go underwater or even stay in a pool for a long time. I have 3 children ages 11, 5, and 2. We are trying to teach them to swim, and I also want to be able to in case of an emergency. How can I get past this traumatic experience, let my guard down and let my HUSBAND teach me to swim?

I would recommend working with a professional therapist to help you deal with the phobia that you seem to have. You can ask your friends and the people you know for recommendations. Most likely, he will start with gradual exposure to water, ion an environment that you feel safe in.
