What do you think about schools having smoking areas for students?

While typing my thoughts to another poster's discussion, I was talking about our local school having a smoking area for students. In my state it is illegal to purchase cigarettes if under the age of 18 years old. Granted, there are students who are age 18 at the high school, but in my opinion, to allow them to smoke while on school property just entices the younger students to want to smoke! Strangly, we are actively pouring money into programs to discourage and stop teen smoking, yet we have a smoking area out behind the school that can be used during lunch and between classes. What are your thoughts?

I think that it's crazy to provide an area anywhere on school grounds for smoking. That would be for both the students and the faculty. Why encourage it and make it easily accessible? More and more businesses are making their entire property non-smoking these days. This includes the parking lots also. The hospital where I am going to work does not even allow people to sit in their cars and smoke if they are parked in an employee lot. Maybe if smoking is made to be more and more inconvenient more people would quit. The way I see it, if even one person quits because of one of these rules then it is worth it.

Kudos to you girl! I agree. To provide an area for teens to smoke is condoning the habit! As you say, the trend is to decrease smoking on private property!

I think it is an awful idea. It will encourage the kids to smoke more. And, they need to be on school grounds the entire day until they go home.

Yes, me too margieanne. It sends the wrong message to the students to have an area for them to smoke.

My son's high school was a smoke free campus. The mornings when I drove him into school, I was appalled - outside the school was a crowd of smokers, students and teachers alike. There was nothing the school could do, but these people were obstructing traffic, you had so slow down and wait for the crowds to part to drive through. There should be no smoking on a high school campus. That is just wrong.

I didn't think that they still had areas like this. If you can't smoke in most public places why would there be an area at school for this? I do assume you are talking about high schools. In most places I think students face disciplinary action if they even have tabacco on campus. If they are still around, it is the dumbest thing I've heard of in a long time. We should be discouraging smoking, not encouraging it.

well shoals, I'll tell you, I live in an area that is soooo far behind the times in so many ways! Our local high school has a smoking area! There is still smoking in all public buildings (only exception is the courthouse...for some strange reason). Yes, we SHOULD be discouraging smoking, you are exactly right!

I am a teacher and in the school where I last taught, the "no smoking" policy was implemented. For me, if the school would like to advocate this policy, then it had to be an all or none thing. In short, there should definitely be no area within the campus or school where students can smoke, and the school did that which turned out to be successful. A lot of people nowadays are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers of smoking not only to themselves but to others, so I believe that the school should help in the fight for this growing addiction. Thus, I totally agree with you.

I think it is absurd to do this, it is illegal for kid under 18 to smoke so why do we need a smoking area on school grounds when no one should be allowed to smoke anyway.

It's ridiculous to have smoking areas for students. i think that would only encourage more kids to smoke. Kids do things that they think are cool and for some crazy reason smoking has always seemed cool to kids. Even with all the information on how bad smoking is for you, because kids think it's cool they will do it anyway.

Probably, this decision is the best in that school. It is not tipical. It is good for the purpose to protect the children who do not smoke. I think in the most school there are students who smoke in the lavatory, and it is worse. Here in Hungary it is forbidden in schools, and the students come to the street to smoke. But there are schools where it is forbidden to go to the streets before the end of last lesson. If the parents do not teach their children that smoking is not a normal activity, the school is not enough to teach them.

i think it's totally ridiculous! Of course there's going to be people saying "well, if we don't give them a place to do it, they'll do it elsewhere". I'm glad that where I live, they banned smoking inside places.

that would be a great idea for people who think out of the box and is open minded. sooner or later, this kids will eventually know how to smoke and they don't need your permission to do that. it's really a way of life and whether we like it or not, it happens..... sad though
