The Democrat from South Dakota was suddently taken ill on December 13th. Soon he will be able to leave intensive care, but his continued recovery in the hospital is expected to take months. Senator Johnson was diagnosed with the arteriovenous malformation, a condition, often present from birth, that causes arteries and veins to grow abnormally large, become tangled and sometimes burst. He was rushed to the hospital after becoming disoriented on a phone call with reporters, and he underwent surgery hours later. He has been out of commission for almost a month. It is a curious question as to how long they should leave his seat empty. Their will be strong Democratic resistance to replacing Johnson because the Republican Governor of South Dakota would most likely pick a Republican to fill the vacancy. This would make the Senate 50-50 with the Vice President being the tie breaker. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

While this may be a sidebar,it was announced today Johnson will recover fully and will be running for re-election.While this opens up a whole field of jokes(which I will fight the urge to exploit),it also shows how dedicated some of the government representatives are.
