Haven't heard of Asterisk, but I don't know where they operate. In the U.S. the leading VoIP seems to be Vonage. Local phone and cable companies also have their own VoIP services, but they seem more expensive than Vonage.

The company who leads the development of asterisk called digium. but asterisk itself is opensource. Its free to get. You just (hehe) have to learn how to set it up!

Asterisk is a great solution because it is FREE and I agree that it has many documentations online.

We're currently using this Asterisk solution. And I can say that it works good. Easy to configure and many reference materials can be found in the internet for self study.
