Just a few suggestions for myLot...

I just thought of a couple of suggestions that I thought would be good for myLot to adopt, but I would want some other opinions first. 1) Duplicate Discussions - I've seen this on Digg.com where after you post your story (in this case, discussion), it searches through all of the stories and checks the urls and topics for matches that look like duplicates and asks you to verify that it is unique before it is posted. This would only be for discussion topics, of course, but I don't know how many times I come across a discussion where someone is asking how much people make on myLot or what your favorite color is. There's always the report button, but having it before could help out both users that weren't aware of the topic already being discussed, and the myLot staff not having as many reported discussions to go through. 2) Putting the tags on the Submit Discussion page - This would make it a whole lot easier for discussions to get tagged, especially if it were mandatory to add a tag to the discussion. If myLot wants all their discussions tagged, then they should make it more convenient to tag them, rather than have the tagging page show up after the discussion is submitted. 3)An easier report button - I think it would be better if the report button didn't always take you to a page where you must type in what is wrong with it. (Again, like Digg) There should be some of the most often reported options come up when you click the button, like "duplicate discussion/response" or something, whichever are the most common reports received by myLot. This just makes it easier to report something that is commonly found on myLot (like the 50th discussion of "How Does myLot Work?") without having to type it all out. 4) Spellcheck - I know that there is a built-in spellchecker in Firefox, but it would be really neat to have at least an option to check the spelling of your discussion or response before posting it. I see a lot of spelling errors in discussions where people don't care about their spelling, but for the ones that do care that their discussions are spelled correctly, like myself, a spell-checker would make it easy to catch those one or two mistakes that you missed. 5) Editing your discussion - It would be cool if you could have at least a minute or so to edit or delete your own discussion or response right after you posted it, just in case you thought better of it or realised you had a few more things to add and forgot to preview the discussion or previewed it and decided after. These were just a couple of suggestions that I would like to see. I don't know if they would work or not, but I thought that I'd get some opinions on them from the community, because the community is what matters.

I was going to do just that, but I figured that it would be better to see what the rest of the community thought, first. If the majority didn't like the ideas of the changes, then there's no sense in sending it to the staff just to be argued against later if they were put into place.

I'm not exactly looking for them to be argued. I just want to get enough support for me to want to submit them to the staff. I can understand the coding issues, but if they can be done, I'd like to see them.

^ These are good suggestions and can make Mylot more powerful site for us . However , few of them are difficult to implement on this ASP based website ... There is no need for the members to argue on these suggestions . if these can be implemented by Mylot , all will experience the usefulness of these suggestions .

all of your ideas are good ones but I especially like #5. I often think of something I should have added or I see an error that I hadn't noticed.

Exactly, I find that, too, with either edits that I didn't find or add, or with finding out that it's a duplicate by reading the related discussions at the bottom.

Haha, not an hour after starting the discussion and I already have two more ideas that I don't know what to do with. I don't really want to just start a new discussion for them, but there is no editing after it's started. Oh well.

I think this is an excellent idea. Good thinking on these ideas. I too especially like #5. I was hoping they would put on here that we could delete our discussions if we so desired to as well as any responses of other posts. Keep up the good work everyone, this just might work after all. lol

I think #5 would be my favourite as well. Sometimes I end up writing a lot of stuff, and then afterwards I realise that I probably shouldn't have written it, but it was too late. No takebacks.

I really like your duplicate discussions idea. That would help out a lot, because there are so many similar discussions here at Mylot. All of your suggestions are really great, well-thought out ones! But I agree the most with the duplicate topics idea that you had. I wonder if Mylot will implement such a feature in times to come?^_^

searching of duplicate discussions is done at the expense of users bandwidth . This is not friendly for many , who have data limits and slow speed connections ...
