How to draw out the artist inside?

I really do love drawing and my older brother was blessed with this talent early in life and actually earned his living as a graphic designer, and that was before computers, so he was really good. He has passed away now but he had a talent that made me jealous. What is strange is that in my youth I was into a lot of bad stuff including drugs. Yeah I know but I was a very insecure teen. Anyways. While I was on drugs I could draw stuff that people would just fall in love with but without the drugs my mind just didn't mesh with my hands and nothing works. What is that makes that happen. Get on drugs and draw up a storm, get of the drugs and just dry up.
