How many firefighters or EMTs are out there?

My son is a firefighter and absolutely loves his job. Sometimes I wonder how he can love running into a burning building, cutting someone out of a car after a wreck, stabing a needle in someones arm to start an IV, staying up half or all night and going again the next day, but he does it because he likes it. There is a brotherhood there that is absolutely exceptional. His friends come over often and they seem like my adopted children. I can't help but love them all.
