They are awesome with small children. I have a 2 year old and got our male almost the same time he was born. If our son is somewhere that dog is usualy not far behind him. They can grow such a strong bond and be very protective yet gentle. Our son sits on him, pulls his hair, hits him, you name it's been done and that dog still loves him and has never once growled at him. They are mild mannered and great indoor or outdoor pets.

They are very loyal.Mine is a shadow to my son and my husband. He loves to go in the truck so he waits at the back of it whenever we are outside.WE had found a kitten and he took her in like it was his.He would clean her and she would sleep curled up in his paws. That was 3 years ago and he still lets her do it.

My golden is actually a mix. We got her at the shelter. I love how silly and goof y she is, yet she is very caring and sweet. she's a great dog.

I never considered myself a ''dog'' person till I owned a Golden Retriever. My dog, Callie is 7 years old now and is the light of my life. My children have left the nest but Callie is still here! I cannot speak for other owners or even other dogs of the breed but Callie is an extremely perceptive dog. She knows when one of us is sick and will not leave our side...perhaps she is able to sense something that humans simply cannot...like perhaps a person smells ''different'' when ill ...I really don't know how she knows...she just does. Also when someone has raised a voice in anger she will immediately go to them and start licking and pawing them....hard to stay mad when that happens! She is also wonderful around the cats and the rabbit. The other pets seems to instantly be attracted to her and will follow her around the house...when she lays down there is at least one cat curled up next to her. She is great in the house...I know some larger dogs are not allowed in the home and are required to stay in a kennel or in the garage...but she is first and foremost a companion dog and would never be happy away from people. I also just find the breed overall to be a very attractive looking dog....they just embody ''dogness'' to me! I like the look of a dog with a longer type coat like the retrievers' but without looking too pretentious or ornamental. To me, they are real dogs for real people!
