I'm trying to write a song with my guitar and I don't know whether I should start with the lyrics and then with the melody or vice versa. what's your advice?

I used to start off by writing down title name ideas. then use that to write a chourus, start a verses etc and then build - re write build and finish. I haven't wrote for awhile now but when the muse comes back i'm sure i will.

some people write the lyrics first then the melody. others the other way around. then some people will work on both at the same time. i find it's easier to work on both at the same time. if i write the lyrics first sometimes i have to change them to suit the melody, or to make it sound better. do what feels right for you. there is no wrong answer.

Hi I think it depends on the person, for me I get a tune and chords and a rhythm and after that I struggle with lyrics. It amazes me that people have a song written in a day when I need to leave it and keep going back for some inspiration.Dont force it ,if you are good with words just have a book to jot down ideas and sentences and thoughts.I recommend a book called Six Steps to songwriting Success by Jason Blume. It gave me some help on how to come up with lyrics etc, good luck

I've written a lot of songs and the best way is to start thinking of a melody, hum it in your head over & over & then i try to figure out the chords to the melody. Once the chord patter is set, i write the lyrics.

You could also try to hold on to a groove (without any specific chord, kinda percussive) and hum a melody, until you get into the rhythm and start making it flow. It could do the trick if you feel somewhat lost and want to write an up-tempo song!

I usually combine writing song and recording song, I'm too lazy to do it otherwise. So, I'm quite often playing guitar, scales and chords, until I find something interesting, riff or somekind of phrase. Then I'll make some kind of basic drums to it with computer, and then try to make different variations from the riff. Then I'll take bass and try to play some good stuff, again variating riff and going even to complete other direction, just as long as it sounds good. Usually at this point, I have already good picture about the songs structure, so I'll make basic drums for the lenght of the song. Then I'll lay bass track, using all the idea I got previously, but still open for new ideas and put then on the track without too much thinking. Now I, listen the "song" and if something is popping out to my ear, I'll change that part and then I finalie the drums with cool fills and other stuff. Then I'm ready to lay guitar tracks, I usually do two quite similar if not just doubling tracks and one on top where I put solo's and all kind of small stuff. Then I'll play somekind of melody for the parts where I think singing should be, and send that product for the master of vocals. He'll listen my stuff and sends me his ideas and I'll work them out, until we're happy. Then I'll remove my melody track and he will sing it. That's how it's done.

The best way is to start it the way you'd like to start it. Sorta sounds stupid but its true. You can start a song either way and sometimes its a combination. If you want some advice to point you in a good direction (there is no "right" direction), start by making some chords. There are formal ways to write a song, but if you have a good ear for music then you should have no problem. If you would like some theory on how to end a song I could tell you that.

I personally think that you should start with the lyrics then the melody. Much like a poem. make your lyrics capture people ears so they stay for the melody. Hope this helps. have a great day and good luck with your song.

Start with the idea, whatever it is. Musical ideas develop as you work with them, so do lyrics. This is really pre-arrangement of a piece. Very rarely will you get a piece of music and lyrics that just naturally fit. They do have to work with each other.Bars can interrupt lyrics, and vice versa. One hint would be let the guitar have its say. With me, it has a casting vote on arrangements. Whatever anyone thinks is supposed to be happening, it's the instrument that actually knows.

What I do is i come up with a first line: to start a train of thought...for the lyrics...then try to come up with a good melody for it. From then on, i just sit with my guitar...experimenting until i come up with something...
