Should I do the updates on Windows?

I get icons that ask me to install the latest windows update frequently. Some people tell me to do them, but others have said not to because they slow down your computer. What's the right answer??? (& WHY?)

They shouldn't slow down your computer. The updates contain protection and upgrades the help you keep pace with the vast changes that are happening everyday.
