Racist? Did the white american start slavery?

Ok check this out, Im at work when i fit in very well with my coworkers although, theres very few white people. I work for a call center and the mass majority of people are black or from other other countries. We were talking and one black guy says "sarcastically: white american folk started slavery" I couldnt help to start researching it, BUT before i tell you the awnser i want to know... who do you think started slavery???
