The traditional way is to be competitive on wages and benefits so they would have to take a pay cut to leave you. The other way, and a more effective way, is to make sure they understand they are appreciated. The company I work for managed to keep employee turnover under control for years even though they paid less than many other companies around us because they took the time to recognize their employees by having family days, banquets, surprise gifts, etc. Now that they've gotten away from that, they can't keep employees.
