It is indeed dangerous talking on cell while driving even with handsfree. Lives could be lost. As for listening to music/songs, I think it is acceptable so long as one does not get too engrossed and be alert at all times.

I live in LA - and every person is on their stinking cellphone on the freeway. Seriously, our freeways were bad enough before everyone got on their phones. It's almost every day when I have to watch out for reckless drivers who almost hit me, and invariably they are on their cell phone. I admit, I'm a typical LA driver and do talk on my cell phone, but I like to think I'm more responsible than other drivers I see. It's bad. I was in a car accicent a few years back and the guy who hit me was on his cell phone!
As for "fading" into another lane without realizing it, here in LA, people do it on purpose. They don't realize that their cars are equipped with turn signals. I swear I think I'm one of the last people in LA who uses their turn signals. LA drivers are just notoriously bad, and the cell phone problem just makes it that much worse

I carry my cell phone when I am in the car. If I need to call, I will pull over to use it. We have one redlight that is exceptionally long, and I have been known to make a quick call while at that light. But I hang up before I resume driving. My state has no laws as yet regarding cell phone use while driving. I actually wish that we did. Of course, as with any law, many would not follow it. I get particularly concerned about new drivers who have just obtained their drivers license. In my opinion, they have an increased risk for accidents anyway, and to try to use a cell phone at the same time as driving is just asking for trouble! (Notice, I said new drivers...and did not just imply new teen drivers....any person of any age who has just obtained their license!)
