ratings - are they important?

i noticed that in a discussion there is a button wherein i can rate it , , is it really necessary? , , i mean , , why should we rate other discussions? , , =s i am just confused , , do we get additional money for rating and/or when my posted discussion has been rated?

I don't think we get paid if we received a rating. People do it to credit the users according to its response to the topic. And your not obligated to rate every user who made a comment.

I honestly am unsure as to how the rating works myself. I use to go to another board and it was also new and every time I pushed the rating button I got points. I'm still trying to figure out how the rating button works here. If you find out let me know. :)
