How do you get rid of pains in your knee?

I have had pains in my knees since I was about 14. My doctor said that the pains were only growing pains and they should go away by the time I was 18. I am now 21 and the pains are increasingly getting worse. I don't know what to do. I have tried pain meds but they don't work and if I put ice on it, it makes it hurt even more. What should I do?

Hello Lady, I too had knee pains while going through my teen years and was told it was growing pains. Then when I was about 15, my left knee swelled up and hurt worse then ever. I was taken to a doctor, who took an xray, which revealed a bone spur several inches above my knee, on the inside of my leg. It looks just like a thorn. Anyway, the doctor recomended I leave it alone and wait to see if it continued to bother me. If it did, it could be removed. Well, the swelling went down and never really came back. I am 34 now and wish I had gone ahead with the removal because while the spur never caused great discomfort, it was often mildly uncomfortable, especialy when there is pressure on it. You can feel it below the skin. I don't know if you have any problems beyond growing pains, but I can tell you that most of the people I know who complained of aches and pains while we were growing up, still have pain today almost 20 years later. Many people who suffer from arthritis start seeing signs very early, although it doesn't get too bad until the later years. Just my 2 cents... Good luck...

You should probably get the opinion of another doctor. Some doctors don't know every thing and they end up giving people advice which could cost them.

My friend used to have a lot of knee problems. He took shark cartilage. I think you can get it at GNC or your local nutrition store. I'd do a search on it though first.

Go see a specialist... A normal doctor dosen't know that much about your knees, you might need surgery. It's a simple procedure and you will be up and running the same day probably. I've had it myself a few years back.
