English Writing Major: Okay, now what?

I got my English Writing degree back in 1998 and still have no idea what to do with it. I get advice from other people to teach, but I have no patience for it. I'd like to know how other English majors reconcile their need to communicate with their need to survive and what types of careers they enter.

I think that if you were to teach you would do well to teach at the college level. I could see you in something having to do with publishing.

There is teaching, of course, but don't do it if you don't love it. There are other opportunities, such as anything with your government's arts program (check local government bodies too), libraries, PR departments, any publishing related job (anything from copywriter to editor), and things like that. IT companies are more and more looking for writers to develop content for websites, but that is often on a freelance basis. Just off the top of my head.
