The Motive Behind Looking Beautiful

We all, men and women alike, try to look smart, handsome and beautiful. We spend a lot of money in this way. But while men feel flattered when admired for their smartness, women often get angry. I have failed to understand the logic. If we despise such compliments, why do we decorate ourselves. We seem to have the immediate reaction that the person is trying to come closer to take undue advantage. If we want to be complimented only by those who know us, there seems to be no sense. If they know us, they know about our beauty also. Another interesting things is that if the wife's beauty is eulozised by a lady, the husband feels proud. If the husband's smartness is appreciated by a man, the wife also feels inflated. But the moment it is the other way round, manay eyebrows are raised. Why is it so?
