Islam has common roots with Christianity and Judaism; those who practice the three religions are known as "The People of the Book". All have a common history, and a monotheistic system of beliefs. Can somebody tell me what the difference is between the major sects or divisions within Islam; and briefly discuss the reasons for the discord and disagreements between them? In the Christian religion, there is a division between catholics and protestants; a division between catholics and orthodox churches, and many divisions within protestantism. Jews are divided into orthodox and more liberal belief systems. I would be interested in knowing more about the various belief systems and divisions within Islam.

From what I have read the two largest sects are the Sunnis and Shi'ites. Sunnis are the larger and more orthodox. Sunnis follow the traditional beliefs of Islam. There also some other sects but the differences appear to be similar to those experienced in any religion. Mostly in how that particular sect interprets and applies the beliefs of the Holy Quran. There are also divisions within the sects themselves. As an open minded person I wish that Christians, Muslims, and Jews could find a commom ground. Isn't it odd that we all worship the same god, "the God Of Moses" but cannot accept each other. It is disputed but some believe the prophet Muhammad to be a descendant from the line of the prophet Ishmael.

Religion to me is just crap. It is the reason we see almost all the bs happening in the world today, either from Islam, or Judaism, or Christianity. And it is also makes people narrow minded and superstition. I do believe in a universal force, but I believe we are made to explore anc create, for our betterment.....or for our misery.

I think you lack the understanding of what is religion. For you to say that religion is "crap" is also religion. That meaans you believe in some form of religion which you described as "universal force" religion is a belief system of any kind. Whether you believe in yourself or in a universal supernatural being whatever your belief is, it's religion. Every human being that reason is religious
