heavy metal pioneers

I think Sabbath were the inventors of what we now loosely call "heavy metal". No one before them had been able to create such hard-hitting music . . . and no one after them [except to some extent Iron Maiden] has had the skill or the boon to reproduce Tony Iommi's magic. Do you think that heavy metal [Iommi style] is still enjoyed, or has Goth and Death totally taken over the global metal-music scene? [Any die-hard Sabbath fans still around, contact screaming_jesus@hotmail.com; I would love to hear from you]

I agree that Heavy Metal was Pioneerd by Sabbath, but you can go back further than Sabbath, and it can be said there is a little taster of Heavy metal with they way the iff is in, The Kinks - You've Really Got Me...Nt Im not sayin' its Heavy Metal, but ina way, it can be traced to 1964. Eitherway, I agree Sabbath were the Pioneers, and Led Zeppelin had some influence, as well as Deep Purple.
