I got to this discussion by random lottery I made with a dice. I see this discussion is old and the starter might be gone... Anyway , finding a research to participate in as a student may be difficult and you need some luck and not just send mails , you better call and introduce yourself to increase your chance to get accepted. There may be a good chance that after 6 years you realised there is not much work in biotechnology even though it is an interesting subject to learn. Some of the work is just dirty work and you just do technical things for low salary... My brother learned biotechnology and almost gratuated. He made his participation in a research in one university in our country , israel. Then he started working at a factory that cleared water and he had just to check water samples all day long for low salary. After some monthes , he went to another job in a medicine company called "taro" , he had to do an accurate work , I don't know what exactly but it was still technical work mostly , and the standards were high. He didn't like that job. He decided that there was no point in keep looking for jobs in that area (at least before second degree. He decided to learn something else).
