New Discussions- how fast they vanish

Anyone been watching how fast their new discussion sails off into the twilight on Page 23 of new discussions?
I figure the average new discussion has a lifespan of about 30 seconds to a minute, max, on the front page. How do we keep them in view longer, so people get a chance to look at them easily?
How about a time generated list, under interests rather than "new discussions" , with basic heading and tags, to follow the thread? It'd use existing data, and not require a reworking of the basic format. You'd also know instantly how old or new the discussion was.
So this discussion would be Wanderlaugh-today-time-heading-tags-responses-last response so and so
