When I leave for a vacation I often have to take my cat with me, 'cause I don't have anyone to leave her with.. But it's a real challenge, 'cause she becomes so nervous and doesn't stay a second in one place... she seems to hate the car, and she's giving us a really hard time while travelling... What can I do ?

I have two cat carriers for my cats, when we need to travel with them. They are made of durable plastic, with a top and a bottom that lock in place. We had to transport our cats like this all the way across the United States. Unfortunately, one of my cats pees whenever she gets in a car, so that was messy. But if you have no choice but to travel with a cat, a carrier is the best option. Make sure it has room enough for a little food & water dish (many carriers come with them, that attach to the side of the carrier).

Well, I put a towel down in the bottom of the cage. :)

mine pees too, so i have to put a small litter box down, and she goes there, but if i put her in a cage, she'll make a mess

Most cats don't like to ride in a car as the movement is what they fear. I have only seen like 2 people who had a cat that loved to go for rides in a car, but they trained them when they were only kittens. Maybe take your cat for more rides, but start with short ones. Start her in a cage might help also. You will have to talk to her so she knows everything is ok...We take our cat to the Vet or even to get groomed we are talking to her all the way there. She is getting better about the rides...But it all takes time...

i've tried talking to her, holding her in my arms, etc, nothing helps, it's like she's driving crazy when the car is moving, and she's making us crazy , too. but i guess you're right about training her from the begining, 'cause everithing i tought her when she was a kitty still works, but now i have no chance teaching her anything... she's become so independent and full of personality...

The best thing you can do is leave her at home and have somone stop by every other day or so to feed her. Otherwise, you should include boarding fees in your budget.

I really wasn't thinking to sell the car, only she's driving us crazy, jumping all around, and getting under the pedals, i'm afraid she's a menice... and as much as I hate putting her into a cage, it seems like the only solution..

Just replace your cat with a nice and gentle cat.

I know your problem very well. I had a cat years ago that would get very upset when we took him away with us and he was very afraid of his carrier. He would pant terribly and you could see he was afraid. I took him to the vet and asked him what I could do to make him more comfortable. He gave me a tranquilizer for him. I gave him the tranquilizer about an hour before leaving (no food for a period of time before, I forget how long). I also used a cat harness on him which the person in the passenger seat held and restricted his movements, put a towel on the floor and he laid there and fell asleep. I also put a towel on top of him which made him more comfortable. The windows also had to be closed because the noises from outside upset him. I now have 5 cats and one is a terrible traveler no matter how far we travel. He tends to make himself sick. As soon as he knows he's going out he starts shaking and within minutes he's throwing up before the car even moves. He also has diarrhea in the car. We set up a small litterbox in the back of the car on the floor and he will go in that. I've tried tranquilizers with him but that doesn't work with him so we just make him as comfortable as possible because he also is worse in the carrier. I would ask your vet about the tranquilizers if it's a long trip and if at all possible use a carrier because if there is an accident your cat is safer and won't fly through the car and get hurt.
