What is free money?

Is it really something like free money around us. Whats the secret behind adsense, links exchange , directory submission, affiliate programs etc. Do they really work?
Last night i was thinking, the expense of my internet connection and electricity are more than the amount i earn from these programs. So when will I achieve the equilibrium stage from where i can start earning the real income.

well, if you keep posting on mylot and goldage, you could earn $20-$50 monthly.
if you have other paying programs, you could earn more.
and if you invest the money you earned, you could further earn more.
but there is always RISK!
