how long does your child spend on homework?

My third grader spends too much time doing homework. It's not that it's too much work and he definately knows how to do it. He just starts daydreaming or doodling and strays from his work easily. In the second grade, I used to sit with him and work through the assignments with him. But now I feel he is old enough to sit on his own and get it done. He has a quiet spot. I help him set up. I make sure he understands what he is supposed to do. The I leave. I will come through in about 20 minutes and see that he has very little completed. I get really frustrated, but he is the one missing out on having fun because he wants to fool around instead of doing his homework.

I think it is mostly disinterest. My second grader throws a fit when I make her do her homework. Now I have it so she has to do her homework and read at least 20 minutes each night before she can do anything else. It helped alot that she knows it has to be done before she can do anything else.

My 5th grader spends about 30 minutes and does NO real studying for tests that I ever notice. I know he's in for a real wake-up when he gets to middle school next year. My 9th grader spends about an hour a night but does also work on homework during school hours too. I think both of my kids should probably double to amount of time they spend on homework and if I had time I would sit with them more and help them do that but it's had to find the time.

We have the same problem with our third grade boy. Now we set him down at the table so he can be watched. He still trys to get off to doodling, but with us being there to stay on target, it's getting better. Usually, he spends somewhere around an hour to two hours.

It depends on the age and what assignments come home. My 6th grader usually has homework each night, but no more than 30 minutes. My 9th grader has more homework than that but he gets a lot of it done while in class. They do seem to have a lot of projects, book reports etc to do also.
