Can daydreaming be managed?

My son is not on medication. I know he's got a problem concentrating on his school work. He is also very figity. Today, it took him an hour to finish writing 2 paragraphs. he told me he was day dreaming. Later, while I was cooking, he finished other assignments just fine. He said that it was because I was right there. Now I can't stay and watch him do his work.... can I? At rd grade, he should be able to do this on his own, right? I don't mind helping, but I don't want his to depend on me to walk him through. BTW, he only has a daydreaming problem when he has a writing assignment. If he has to answer questions 1 - 25 or something like that, he does better. So this is so long. I am frustrated as he is still sitting dow there, trying to finish his work.

My boys are on medication, and still sometimes wander off into a daydream. It does get frustrating, but as they get older it should hopefully happen less often. At least it is happening less often with my boys.

i'm 21 years old and doing a masters degree and i still end up day dreaming and doing nothing for ages. Hasn't stopped me doing well at school, just sometimes takes me a while to start doing work. Don't worry about it, just go and prod him every now and again and tell him to do some work, thats what i get my housemates to do.

Do you have ADHD, may I ask? Thanks for the response. It makes me feel better. I never know if I'm supposed to keep after him or let him take forever.

i don't think so, but then doctors seem to be keen to put every quirk in peoples behaviour down to some sort of condition so i might be told i do if i was to ever check it out, but i like being able to wander off with my thoughts so don't think i'll bother finding out

I only asked because we're in the ADHD interest. Didn't mean anything by it.

My son does that with writing, too. He is also ADHD. He can whip through math questions, but ask the kid to write and he can take an hour to write three lines. I think it is something to do with the need for him to be creative to write something ... which gets him thinking...and then its hard to get back on the task of writing. Thats just a guess though. I just remind my son every few minutes what his job is. Or I ask him what his job is - which helps him get back on task.

does that frustrate you to have to keep reminding him? Or are you pretty cool with it. I have to be more patient. After a few times, it ends up being more like a "BARK" than a friendly reminder. I get so mad at myself when I lose my cool.

Yes it frustrates me a LOT. I constantly remind myself that he isn't choosing to be this way ... he is literally functioning to the best of his ability. Kids, by nature, want to please their parents....so we need to assume that they are always doing their best and go from there. Believe me, I make it soudns easier than it is ... I do get really frustrated. I try not to let him see it, though.

writing assingments are easy to daydream while doing. depending on what the assingment is, it allows his mind to roam on the varies subjects in which he can write on the course of writing his paper. i am 18 years old and working on my first book, and find myself daydreaming alot simply because when i write, it allows me to see things from a different angle, from a different point of view. take it for whats its worth
