Are pedophiles on the rise?

There are increasing cases of kidnap and harrassment of children all around the world. A recent case in one of the countries says that a person kidnapped and killed 17 children. What should be done to stop these so that our children are safe and can lead a healthier life? How can we detect such persons and have them away from the mainstream of society so that we are less scared of the happening of such events?

See, I don't know if I agree. It's a bit like serial killers, all of a sudden, there were serial killers by the handful and it was dubbed a new phenomenon. Is it? Or is it because communications are global now and police methods are more effective? Maybe there have ALWAYS been scores of these criminals and no one ever knew? In the case of serial killers, one is reminded of people like Elizabeth Bathory and Gilles de Rais, who got away with it for so long (and with such an extensive and horrendous array of crimes) because they were very wealthy. Is pedophile activity really picking up, or are we simply more aware of it now? Food for thought. I guess I didn't really answer your question (the answers are pretty obvious, but making them work is trickier!). But in a way, it's probably easier to prevent these acts than it was in the past.

Yes, the last part of your response was striking. I also think that prevention shoud be the name of the game. Thank you.

Thanks for best response. I think sometimes prevention is difficult, because people don't expect their relatives or neighbours to do this. Many people live double lives though and the communities onyl find out when it's too late. What is truly terrible is when the families of the children know wht's going on and cover for it, out of neglect or shame.

That is because of the unknown ways in which twisted minds work.

I don't think there's more pedophiles, it's just the media is paying more attention to them now.

I think paedophiles have always been around but because of world wide broadcasting we are now just more aware of it. If my memory serves me correctly we learnt at university that in the Shakespearian days rich lords had young boy servants with whom they had relationships. So I would say that there has always been an undercurrent of paedophilia within society, it's just that in the past it was never named and so could not be exposed.

That is an interesting perspective. I feel now a days it is taking rather a violent turn and causing more deaths. That could be one of the reasons why this issue is in the news. anyways, I strobly believe that we should find out a way to stop this and protect our children.

I don't think it's on the rise either, as has been previously stated, I think it is just that people are discussing it more openly, which is great. Discussing things also helps to lead to solutions to problems. Although the pedophiles have more means available to them now I believe to get in touch with children (the internet for one) I also believe these can backfire on them and caught them caught a lot quicker.

I don't think it's on the rise. I just think we are hearing about it more now and we know more than we did like we can find out if a pedophile lives near us. Unfortunately, they have a right to live in society with the rest of us so there is nothing we can do to keep them out. I used to work for a missing and exploited children npo and it was really sad. I personally don't think people can be helped that molest children. I think they should stay in prison or in a in house program forever.
