How would I deal with my daschund's mange?

Kichiro, my 2-year old daschund is inflicted by mange and has to undergo several visits to his vet. Subjected to usual shots supposedly effective to treat his skin problem, he would feel better and his skin conditions improved only to start pestering him again after two or three months. The costly vet trips is draining my budget. Friends suggested the use of motor oil ( god ! )and petroleum jelly. I often gave him prednisone tablets on lowest dosage but to no avail and had to stop due to my fear of damaging his kidneys. I am at loss. I love my dog and would not just take his condition sitting down.
