How do you know which kinds to take and how many and what they help in the body?

When I moved in with my father and step-mother, they put me in vitamins (I was about 15). I don't remembe what it was, but it was probably a multi-vitamin. When I went on birth control pills, the doctor told me to start taking B-12 to help combat the stress. I noticed a huge difference when I started on the B-12 and can tell if I've forgotten to take it for a couple days. I think it's the folic acid in it, but something works. I try different things all the time to see what works best, but I'm very picky about my B-12 - some don't work. Recenly I started on a whole wellness program that has it's own vitamins. I was skeptical at first, but was very happy that I didn't suffer any setbacks like the previous problems when I stopped taking B-12 for something else. I know we should try to get the vitamins we need in our diet, but drinking a couple gallons of milk a day to get the calcium I need it not going to happen! I also can't eat a dozen oranges for the vitamin C I need.

Hey Sandie61! Thanks for the best response :) Sorry it's taken a while, but sometimes I miss replies to my responses... I don't know if you've guessed it or not, but the wellness program I've been using is also Melaleuca. The vitamins, as well as the rest of the product line, are really good for you and we're very happy with the results.

Vitamins and other supplements are usually helpful, mainly because they replace deficiencies. However, everyone has different needs. It's best to do basic dietary supplements, just making sure you get all the things you need. This is really just maintenance of a good supply of dietary needs. Common wisdom is that they aren't effective if you don't need them, and that should be borne in mind when taking them. It is also true that you can get a lot of your dietary needs from ordinary food. One of the myths is that megadoses of vitamins or other supplements will achieve miracles. They don't. Regular doses are quite adequate. Generally any excess will pass through and have no effect. I had depression, and found that an increased mineral, vitamin and amino acid intake helped enormously. That was because I needed to rebuild myself after getting the condition. I got better, and I'm quite sure that diet, exercise, and proper use of supplements helped me to a quick recovery. This is an example of using supplements to meet a personal need. For your own purposes, research the vitamins and their uses, and see how you go. Don't pay any attention to mythology about miracle cures. Supplements work for a reason, and it's pure science. You can check your facts, observe benefits or non-performing supplements, and make up your own mind as a result of informed choice.

I have heard that the lack of nutrients can cause or enhance certain conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, insomnia... I'm glad that someone has had a positive outcome from using the correct nurtitional suppliments.

Yes, I take a few. I take E, C, & a multi. E helps the circulation and it is an antiocident, and C helps your immune system and is also an antiocident, and a multi is all the vitamins and minerals that the body needs to be healthy. Do you take any?

A great place to visit to get really a good idea of what might be just right for you, would be your local health food store. I have found that they are usually very knowledgeable about their product lines and which product would best suit your individual needs...good luck...SS

I've always taken a multivitamin daily. I also have osteoarthritis, so I take Osteo-Biflex which has glucosamine in it for lubrication and help in rebuilding cartiledge. I also take a lot of calcium to help leg cramps and because I don't like milk.

Vitamins are nutrients required in very small amounts for essential metabolic reactions in the body.[1] The term vitamin does not include other essential nutrients such as dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, or essential amino acids, nor does it encompass the large number of other nutrients that promote health but that are not strictly essential.

I went to two libraries and bought several books from a book store to research vitamins. I do know what to take, what they are for and the amount I should take. I take a lot of vitamins and feel they add to my health and if I do get sick, it's not as bad or last as long. I wouldn't do without them.
