I have been trying to rent a house and am constantly being lied to by the landlord. Ive been waiting for the house for over 1 year now and the rent has jumped dramatically, and now hes telling me that the people are still in there and are going to renew their lease, after promising me the house for this upcoming march. Do I have any rights in this or am i basically scewed. Be honest and thanks for the information and suggestions.

Sad to say but your basically screwed. Best thing to do is look elsewhere for a house or a apartment. Since the people in the house they have the rights, They are probably going to pay more to keep the house. The landlord kept uping the price on you. It was like a bidding war, who accepted the higher offer got the house. I could be totally wrong. A year is a long time to wait for a house to rent. The location I'm at it's cheaper to buy a house than to rent one, scarey huh. Good luck in finding a new home.

I don't get it...whose the landlord and whose the owner? If you're the owner, shouldn't you be the landlord? Can you clarify just exactly what is your relation to the property as compared to the guy?

I don't think you have any legal action unless he signed a lease with you stating the date and signed by both parties. I have been a RE agent for 20yrs and have heard of other people having a simular situation. The landlord was holding on to you as a renter as he was negotating rents with the current tenant. If you like that area you may want to know on a few doors and ask neighbors if they know of any rentals in the neighborhood. Also, post a "Wanted to Rent" poster a the grocery store. Try www.craigslist.com for local rentals. Best of luck, you still have time.
