Global Warming! Is it serious?

January 19, 2007 2:16pm CST
There is alot of talk at the moment about Global Warmig and the collapse of the polr ice caps. What I want to knowisho you all feel about the subject, is it as serious as he scientists make out? Ihave my own theories about Global Warming, now I'm not saying that they are true, they are purely my own feelings. FirstI would like to say that whether or not the threat of gloabal warming is as serious as they say I thik that findig new more eco-friendly fuel and such can only be a good thing and should be being researched even if the knowledge of global warming wasn't there. However about global warming itself, I am not convinced tha we have polluted the Earth enough for the threat of global warming to be solely our fault. Obviously I'm not blaming the animals and their secret coal factories but what I am meaningis ho do we know that it isn't a natural occurance that would have happened wether we were on the Earth or not, when you look ito the prehistoric cycle of the Earth then there has many different climate changes, perhaps we are facing a new one. Also, I wonder if anyone has thought that the efeects could be coming from the Sun. It is inevitable that the Sun will one day die and while I'm not saying that the end has come for the Sun, is it possible that the sun has otten larger and could coninue to get larger over thousands of years in preparation of its final farewell? Because if the Sun did in fact get larger even by a small amount (which is still in itself a large amount) then it would effect the climate of all the p[anets in it's orbit. So all in all, I would say that I am not 100% convinced of the reason or global warming but it is undeniable tat it is happening and that any change to or life styles to makethe 'greener' is a god thing. What are your thoughts?

uhm, i don't think anyone here knows this so let me tell you. global warming has been proven wrong. yes. WRONG. and if im not mistaken it was the russians who did it. not sure though. whoever it was has actually calculated and proven that even IF all the ice caps melt and all the glaciers everything becomes water, it hardly makes a difference. yes, i AM saying that global warming, the green house effect etc, has been proven to be a sham. nothing is going to happen. they melt. big deal. you won't drown. check it up, im sure you'll find it. now what you should be worried about is OZONE DEPLETION. that is serious. and 100% because of human misbehaviour with nature. if it was a natural phenomenon, it would not be in blotches suddenly appearing mainly in regions which are have people inhabiting it. and in certain regions more than others. one of the major reasons for ozone depletion is chloro flouro carbon. guess where you have it in huge quantities?? deoderants. oh yeah..... they used to have it in refrigerators as well, but i think they've found a substitute. if something scares you, it should be the ozone vanishing, not global warming/green house effect. because global warming/greenhouse effect is bullshit. and proven bullshit now.

I have heard that about the Ice caps melting before, it's to do with water displacement, the weight of the ice floating in the water makes the water level rise. If you were to lift the ice caps away from the earth then the water level wold drop, but if the caps melt they replace the difference with water instead of ice. Not sure if thats clear. Anyway, the ice on top of mountains is a more serious risk to the worlds water levels, if that all melted then the water level would rise. And O-Zone depletion is serious aswell, of course it is but the fact is that global warming IS a risk as although the ice cap problem may not be a problem, the change in the climate is indeed a very big problem, so you see it stil is something to be concerned about. Good points anyway.

ah, but just because it's been proven that global warming etc. is not a threat does not mean that people start misusing things and go on overload. people are already on overload. everyone go greenward. we need nature. and abusing things never got anyone anywhere. eco friendly is the way to be.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. We have had almost no winter here. People in California and Florida are seeing snow. Something really weird is going on and Global Warming is the only explanation anyone has been able to come up with. Frankly it scares me what might lie in the future for us.

Yes, I saw someone post yesterday about some really bad storms they were having in England.
19 Jan 07
We have had a very mild winter here in England, no snow at all and relatively little amounts of ice and frost, it has been very windy recently though and we do have snow forcast or the weekend leading into next week bu I guess we will have to see if it hapens or not. I think global warming is causing much more complex results than was ever thought wuld happen. The future could be very dark.

As George Carlin said- "We haven't learned how to care for one another, we're gonna save the f--- planet?I'm getting tired of that s--t. Tired of that s--t. I'm tired of f---g Earth Day, I'm tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is there aren't enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world save for their Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don't give a s--t about the planet. They don't care about the planet. Not in the abstract they don't. Not in the abstract they don't. You know what they're interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They're worried that some day in the future, they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn't impress me."Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are --ed. Difference. Difference. The planet is fine. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great. Been here four and a half billion years. Did you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We've been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we've only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we're a threat? That somehow we're gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that's just a-floatin' around the sun?The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles...hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worlwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages...And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet...the planet...the planet isn't going anywhere. WE ARE! In short, the planet isnt in danger. We humans are. Its not "save the planet", but a selfish "save ourselves". Sad but true

green house effect, the global night mare.. its been the danger factor ever after the polar caps started to melt.. global warming as such is the effect, where in the infra red radiation gets trapped by the carbon dioxide and other green house gases.. this is a danger factor as the polar caps melting, will increase the water level or to say the sea level thus destroy the inhabitants who live naere to the sea.. this is caused mainly to due to the use of fossil els.. so we need to keep a cut in usage of fossil fuels..

umm...i just know that it makes me nervous! i know that here in Oklahoma, the weather has been different for a long time. It gets really hot now, drought, we get more ice in the winter now than snow..its just not the same..things are changing. i feel like everything that is happening in the world today is just another sign of Christ's return being near.

It is a serious condition and at this point, the reasons or blame don't matter. We've messed up our world as a species and we had better get to the task of restoring our Planet's balance and equilibrium, before She does it for us. There are ways that it can be done that are just waiting to be implemented: http://www.thevenusproject.com but there are individuals, companies and governments who are trying just as hard to undermine and stymie much needed solutions like this... Please don't get the impression that I'm expressing my opinion in an angry tone, I'm really Peaceful by Nature, but I'm also very much concerned that with each day that goes by, these imbalances are being not corrected, and the next day wasted, could be our last chance to do the right thing... The Earth is our Mother, a living breathing Organism, with the power to heal itself and live without us... we as a species cannot and must not disrespect Her, like we do even to each other on a daily basis... May Joy, Abundance and Peace be with you forever! :)

This is one subject I can rant on about! First, in the news today it appears that by 2080 Britain will be enjoying summers with temperatures consistently staying over 20 degrees celcius, also lots of rain will replace the snowfall in Scotland....now onto other facts: The polar ice caps melting will not only destroy animal habitats, but will also raise sea levels, meaning land will be permanently lost and landscapes will change. Ocean currents are also expected to be thrown off course and who knows what the effects will be? Dessertification will accelerate quicker than before, vegetation patterns will change so farmers will have to have a serious rethink about what crops they produce. Horribly insects will be able to move to more countries with the increase in climate. Skin cancer rates will be higher, there will be a lot more unpredictable weather, flooding, storms, droughts. And the bit about the sun that you mentioned, scientists say the sun will eventually burn itself out, so i don't think it's getting larger. I think that the earth has experienced and ice age or two, but i think the phase we have entered is down to man, we're the ones pumping the atmosphere with green house gasses and causing the earth to heat up, obviously it's becoming pretty condensed up there now and at this rate the change will continue rapidly. Ireland and the UK are both set to break temperature records this summer...

Thanks for the support, I also forgot to mention that man is the one cutting down the rainforests and taking away our current best asset in the fight against these global warming emissions.

The whole solar system is heating up not just the earth - are we exporting our pollution to them as well or is the sun simply growing stronger? So what for global warming. We have envolved for millions of years and are a very adaptable species.

We are actually much less adaptable than you might think. Sure if we have our technology we might cope, but if we were placed in a hostile environment we wouldn't survive long.

Pollution may be a cause but probably not the only cause of global warming. Having said hat it dosent mean that we should be careless about pollution. The concentration of pollutants in the air is increasing and we should take necessary steps to stop or prevent it.

I agree totaly wth you, pollution probably is contributing to the effect but like you say thre are probably many other causes going on in the world too and that either way we should 'clean up our act' and make the Earth a better place for all of us.

The name of the movie is an Inconvient Truth. It is very accurate, and very frightening. www.stopglobalwarning.org is the site to see the trailer, as well as where you can view the movie in your area. I truley believe that it is a real threat, as the "little people" we can do things, but ultimately the governments need to regulate what the big business' are doing to our environment.

I haven't seen Al Gores recent movie, probably because I am in England, however all week on the news there hae been special reports from Antarctica whee they captured n film the effects of global warming. Also all week a peguin hastaken up residence with them, they named him Guy, lol. I agree that it is a serious effect, just not certain if we are to blame or if cutting our CO2 emmisions would help.

global warming isnt that much of a problem as everyone is making it out to be. global warming would be happening no matter how come pollution there is in the atmosphere. If it wasnt for global warming the earths temperature would be around -21c, so people should be very pleased that global warming is around

i am looking at the effects of the global warming other day on news channels ,the drought in australia, thunderstorms in pacific oceans, increse in temperatures of western european countries , after looking all these factors i think about the future wat will happen to our kids ,will they be able to see spring weather or snowfall ever in ths future.According to me all this warming stuff is human fault which we can correct by switching to renewable sources of energy and by little more intellgence like switching off our computers and t.v rather than keeping it on standby its saves our electricity bill as well as electricity .Try this method you guys will definately be able to cut your electricity bill by atleast 5% just by switching everything off rather than keeping on standy mode

Also by turning things off instead of leaving on standby you not only save energy but you are gettin rid of a fire hazard in your house. It's win-win

Human activity is polutting the earth and if we fail to take action now, our planet could be sent into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weahter, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves. But some of demages already done. Global warnings is bad news for human life.

Global warming may in fact be real. But what can we do. Every nation could do some things to slow the process. The real question is what is practical and effective. Somethings are next to impossible to do and others are reasonable. I suspect that on a large scale there is little any one nation can do. It will take the effort of all. The U.S. surely has done as much as it could and neither has many countries that has large populations. China for example opens a new coal fire power plant every few days. China is a large country and needs this for its people. India is same way, it has large population and needs power and facilities for their people too. South American countries are burning forest and jungle land in development for their people. All are these are speeding the process we call global warming. The desert lands of Africia and Asia have increased in size as these ares become warmer and drier. As this happens the heat retained by the sands speeds the process. So what is the answer. No one country or nation will ever be able to slow this process alone it will take the efforts of every nation on whatever scale they can to have any impact.

well firsly i believe that global warming is taking place and it is affecting the environment! i am a science student and have learned and understood global warming phenomenon. its because of mainly cfc's - carbon fluoro chlorides. they were used in old type of refrigerators. actually in the refrigeration cycle rather. this carbon fluoro chloride destroys the ozone layer and the harmful radiation such as uv - ultra violet radiation gets into our atmosphere. these radiations are of larger wavelength. i dont know how to post the formaula for this here. anyway, this is banned in countries which are developed such as america since they have found out the problem. where as many third world countries which are economically weak still do make use of this cfc cycle refrigerators. firstly they may be either donated to them or they are cheap and they cant afford costlier, newer ones. hence lies the problem . also if you check it out on the internet you will find dat it has affected the earth in a major way. this is all i can contribute. three cheers for posting such a wonderful and informative topic.

yes it is serious but to be selfish on my behalf i will say nothing is gonna happen to our generation n even our next generation..it is after 2-300 years tht global warming will start showing its influence in such a large scale tht it will be tu late for themto find out a solution of this tiring problem..so the problem its serious..it is us who needs to help our generations tocome...hope people show more n more interest in this n help our bless earth to get out of this problem..

I think global warming is a serious issue. Since it is an ongoing process, we may not be able to experience the effects of it immediately, but the future generations will. I also don't think that the issue here is whether we are entirely at fault for the global warming -- I think it's that we could have stopped ourselves from contributing to it. Maybe it would have occurred either way, but we could have at least slowed it down a bit by employing earth-friendly measures. Most importantly, whether the threat of global warming is real or not, I think we should still find ways to prevent global warming from becoming worse than it already is.

Global warming is the observed increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in recent decades and its projected continuation into the future. The main cause of the human-induced component of warming is the increased atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which leads to warming of the surface and lower atmosphere by increasing the greenhouse effect.Greenhouse gases are released by activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, and agriculture.
