According to tradition, Saint Peter, the apostle, was the longest reigning pope, followed by Pius II(1846-1878) then John Paul II (1978-2005). Urban VII had the shortest term in the papacy. He was pope only for 12 days. Urban VII was not yet even crowned when he died of malaria in 1590. John XII was the first and teenage pope. He was pope at age of 18 in 955. "John" is the name acquired by most popes, the last of which was Blessed John XXII (1958-1963). The latter, incidentally, was the pope who convened the second vatican council which renewed the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI is the 266th pope in the vatican.
