if you are christian, do you speak in tongues by the holy spirit

They were many Christians who practice speaking in tongues. Is it useful or just a mere example for others to follow without knowing the actual use of it. Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gives them utterance The Bible teaches that when us to speak in tongues, we are only gratifying ourselves if there is no translation. But i've seen it done when corporate worship is concerned. Someone just blah, blah, blah. Nobody interprets. This happens nearly every Sunday. I think it is sick to go to that church.

Interesting that you speak of this because I've taken a more indept look at those scriptures mentioned in Acts. Did you ever think of reading all of chapter 2? The Bible has the answer to your questions. When first century christians spoke in tongues, it was not meaningless words, but they were in fact speaking different languages such as mentioned in verses 7-12. These were real languages in which the people mentioned in the verses spoke. There was a reason for speaking in tongues during that period and it was for Jesus' followers to witness about him and the wonderful things of God to others. The speaking in tongues had a role to play in God's purpose. It was not gibberish speech according to the scriptures. I would suggest you read that chapter and come to your own conclusions.

Speaking in a language that you've not learned is still happening today because it happens to me. Sometimes when singing in tongues people walk up to me and start asking me questions about what I was singing about but the question would be in their language and I wouldn't understand them. I'd have to pray and ask God to give me the interpretation of what they were asking me.

I am a Christian and I am a translator of the Word of God from Greek to English and therefore I know and understand Greek but that is not the tongue referred-to in the Holy Bible. When the New Testament was not yet written, speaking in tongues was necessary for others to understand as what happened on the day of Pentecost when the apostles spoke in different tongues for there was in Jerusalem a conglomeration of many people of different tongues or languages and each of the apostles spoke in their (people's) tongues so that they could understand what the apostles were saying and those who did not understand said that they were drunk. Speaking in tongues then was also a proof that they are from God speaking the Word of God and not just anything that comes up to their minds which they themselves could not even understand. Now that the New Testament is complete, there's no more necessity of such speaking of tongues and this was clearly spoken by apostle Paul.

Untrue. When corporate prayer goes forth in tongues there's a need for intepretation for God still talks to His people. When in you private prayer you can talk and or sing in the spirit and ask God for the interpretion to build yourself up.

Yes, I have been blessed with speaking in tongues by the Holy Spirit. However, it does not gratify anyone, but the one doing it. I do it alone in my prayers in faith. However, at church there must be an inturpretation of it, or it should not be done that way. Please pray to God about this, and ask Him to guide you to where He wants you to be. Blessings, M&M

I didn't believe that people spoke in tongues, BUT back in the summer of 2006 I was blessed with the power of tongues. I don't speak tongues to make someone else happy I speak in tongues because it glorifies and worships the Lord. He gave me the ability to speak in tongues to grow closer to Him to allow my Spirit to communicate more with Him. I have been told I have spoken in SPanish, French, German, and Russian. I don't know any of these languages but people who have taken them knew what I was saying so I believe that if God blesses you with the gift of tongues you should use it.

As per Paul, we all should speak in tongues. Speaking in tongues mean our soul praying to God. You can read this in Epistle of Corinthians. I can't speak continuously in tongue, but utters some words in spirit.

I think its just another way for the "church' to real in more money from you. It would be one thing if these people who claim to speak in tongues actually spoke other, older languages that yhey neve rlearned, but most are just babbling garbage phrases and sounds with no meaning whatsoever. and, if, like the charletan preachers who use them say, they are speaking the language of the angels, then at least there ould be some semblance ofsameness to the 'tongues' they 'speak'. Next time it happens just tell the person "Shut up, fool!" and see the response. I'll bet they will be so surprised at being found out, they will indeed stop mid blabber.

I don't call tongues a practice. I don't think anyone should force themselves to do it. It should just come. As far as the interpretation goes it doesn't say that you should not speak in tongues without an interpretor. It just says if it is not then it doesn't edify the whole church but only edifies yourself. A lot of people really are speaking a heavenly language but nobody believes because of that lack. Thats why the church is encouraged to have one present.
