A computer virus is a computer program which reproduces. A computer virus is often simply called a virus. The term is commonly used to refer to a range of malware, but a true virus does not need to be harmful. To distribute itself, a virus needs to execute or otherwise be interpreted. Viruses often hide themselves inside other programs to be executed. A computer virus reproduces by making, possibly evolved, copies of itself in the computer's memory, storage, or over a network. This is similar to, but not exactly the same as the way a biological virus works. It is estimated by some experts that the Mydoom worm infected a quarter-million computers in a single day in January 2004. Another example is the ILOVEYOU virus, which occurred in 2000 and had a similar effect. There are tens of thousands of viruses operating in the general Internet today, and new ones are discovered every day.

Computer viruses are of many types. They together with other malware are constantly being developed by a number of people around the world. Some develop viruses as a prank, others do that to show off and showcase their technical skills. Others do that from a twisted sense of malice or hate while a very small number do that for criminal intent. With the internet, propagation of viruses has been almost instant, unlike before when viruses used to be transmitted through pirated games and software and through exchange of floppy disks. As each variant of a virus or a new type of virus emerges, Anti Virus programs need to do two things: 1. Clean up the virus if it has infected your computer. 2. Inoculate your computer to prevent the virus from attacking your machine. This involves maintaining everincreasing number of Anti Virus Tables and regularly updating them. Till AV programs develop Artificial Intelligence algorithms at an advanced level for intrusion detection, the simplest way is to update your AV program periodically.

It is because everyday, a new virus is being written/programmed. It is in order to avoid/counter these new viruses that updating our anti-virus programs is much required.
