I am a damn good nurse's aide. The problem is that I am seriously obese. I am trying to switch careers to Criminal Justice. I am really not wanting to keep working as a nurse's aide. I get way too attached to my patients. My mom says that I should focus on my studies and weight lose and in 2 years I should have a degree and be skinnier. What do you think?

I think that's an excellent Idea. Working toward your degree may help take your mind of the wieght loss. It's alot easier to be watching your weight when you are working toward other goals. I know what you mean about getting attached. I was a nurses aide for years. Now I manage a group home with developmentally delayed adults. I am seriously attatched to many of the clients I work with. You can't help it when you spend every day with them. The become like family members. Good luck with whatever you do.

I worked with mentaly and physically disabled adults that weren't high functioning so they couldn't be in a group home setting. I really miss them. Thank you for the kind words.

I'm not in either field, but I am going thru a similar change in my life right now. My level of obesity is controllable with diet and exercise, but if your's is dangerous, you might consider that lapband procedure. I have seen people have amazing results from it. That aside, if your do love criminal justice and have had it with nursing, then get back in school, figure out the finances, move in with Mom (if possible) and get a part time job at some benign mega-store like Bestbuy or something. Set your goals, write them down, make a chart/calendar and every day look at it so you know you are one day closer to your goals.

Thanks for the advice. I am not sure my insurance would cover the lapband proceedure because I have PCOS. It basically turns the food I eat into fat instead of fat & energy. I'll look into it but I am thinking that it would be denied for being a pre-existing condition.

well friend, belive me.obesity is no big dual.losing weight is easy if you make your strong mind to.so i think the problem is which career attract you more.choose your preference.and then consider whether and how to get through obstacle in your way such as obesity or anything else.take care.

I have a condition called PCOS that basically means that my body turns everything I eat into fat instead of energy and fat. It is not as simple as mind over matter. I am on Meds but they do not seem to be helping.
