Is the circus and carnival fairs still in town?

As a boy in the 60's and 70's, I was very excited to know the circus was in town. It pleased me very much to see all the tigers, leopards and lions leaping through rings of fire, or trapeze artists swinging about without nets, or acrobats, or tightrope walkers and the ever extravagant ringmaster with his whip and top hat. I laughed at the antics of clowns and when it was finished, I went outside to ride on the carousel and the ferris wheel, buy hot popcorn, peanuts and the various titbits, etc. We had throwing games with prizes galore and it was so much fun - much more than being a couch potato in front of the TV or sitting in front of the PC eight hours straight at work. I don't see them anymore for the past 30 years. Most circuses have died out with no funding. We need another Barnum and Bailey!

I agree with you, we need another Barnum and Bailey. I have not seen them in years and years. I think that NYC has them at Madison Sq. Gardens. When I was little, they had them in a big tent with bleachers and hay on the ground. It was so nice. Oh well, time keeps going with different things I suppose. Blessings, M&M

Thanks for sharing my interest. You know, the only circus acts I see nowadays are those on TV but I really don't feel the flavour, action and excitement as when I watch it live. Those days, circus tickets cost just about US$1 each but now, whenever the circus is in town, it is either the London Circus or the Russian Circus and they play, not in tents but in some air-conditioned stadium and the tickets cost a bomb! Last I heard, the Russian Circus who came to Malaysia had to be sold to a local entrepreneur because the circus management couldn't afford to even feed the animals and they were in pathetic condition. The trainers and workers don't even have the money to go home. My children never had the chance to watch a live circus perform and I feel pity for them. When will we realize that the TV and Computer have been robbing us of the real enjoyment in life?
