What is the best city in the U.S. in which to live?

I'm curious. In my lifetime I've had the priviledge to have lived in 10 different states around the U.S. (for atleast three months in each place). I've also been driven through & explored about 41 of the 50 states. I have lived in Connecticut, Massachusets, New Hampshire, Colorado, California, Idaho, Utah, Washgington, Oregon, and Arizona. I have had the opportunity to experience several cities around the U.S. including Boston, MA; New York City; Providence, RI; Hartford, CT; San Francisco/Oakland/Berkeley, CA Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; Salt Lake City, UT; Moab, UT; Tucson, AZ; Portsmouth, NH, Denver, CO. The list does go on. But my question is this: Which city do you think is or would be the best city in the U.S. in which to live? Get as detailed as you wish as to why you believe what you do. My vote goes to...Portland, Oregon (which narrowly beats out SF & Seattle). I think the west is the best, but that's just me and Jim Morrison. Heck, I even lived in the east until I was 22, so I do have some reference points to work with here. I great deal for me has to do with climate and overall attitude or feel of the city and its relative connection to nature. There is no city quite like Portland, Oregon, but that's just in my experience. Tell me about yours when you have time! -Charlie

I don't think there is any good city to live in.....I would rather live on the beach in Hawaii than anywhere else but they won't let you live there anymore.....It's to cold in the North in the winter.....To Hot in the summer for the south......The west is too expensive and the East is too crowded.....

True enough. Thanks for the response! I'm envious of your Hawaii lifestyle and I'm with you about not living in cities - I live in a small city of 20,000 people - plenty big enough but not too big - and I've got mountains out my back door and ocean out my front - I like it a lot, but sometimes a bigger city is just the thing to cure a little cabin fever. I personally have to get out and shake a leg sometimes and a city can fill that need. In my travels, I just found Portland, Oregon to be the most environmentally friendly city in the U.S. (that's perhaps an oxymoron i know, but it's true - Portland is a green a city as I've found! -Charlie

When someone figures it out please let me know......Right now I'd really love to move to either Italy or Paris....Paris is in my heart, so I really want to move there BAD....but we love Italy too and have family that lives outside an hour away from Rome, so we would like to buy some sort of Villa.....

I am not a US citizen and as a visitor, I visited all important cities in the East coast. I love Washington D.C. for more than one reason.

I would have to say any city in Texas or California. I live in San Antonio and though we have been the fastest growing city for who knows how long(swaps with vegas), it has be able to maintain it's small town atmosphere. As with california, what more do I need to say :).
