I was so worried for him we thought about putting him down even though he is only 8 yrs old. He was losing fur by handfuls all overand I couldn` afford the vet so I went everywhere trying to find a solution At the pet store I finally Found what might work but the owner told me I would probably have to repeat it over and over til it would work. However He did say the reason it works is cause the dog won`t like the tasteof it, so instead of buying this spray that probably wouldn`t work I figured out that my dog hates vinegar and soap ( as CRUEL as it sound ) I decided to try it out. I may have stung him the first couple of times iI used it but it did work. That was mths ago and he still doesn`t chew or scratch and he has grown all his fur back and looks healthier than ever. I don`t need to now as I`ve said his coat is healthy again and it only cost me a few cents rather than dollars at the vet or on pet supplies that may not have worked I put this as a discussion because it worked , I want others to know so they don`t spend hundreds at the vet Thanx for responding

My schnauzer has had problems with hot spots and I have found that diaper ointment mixed with diaper cream and aloe works very well. His skin had be raw to the point of bleeding because he had gnawed at the irritations so much. I put the ointment/cream on and overnight it dried up. I would put it on him at bedtime for a few nights to make sure the irritation wouldn't bother him as he slept and gave it time to heal. He enjoyed the rubbing and attention, too! The hair grew in nicely. I usually have to do this once each summer when it gets especially hot and humid.
