Cats on a Leash

Today at the store I saw a harness and it had a picture of a cat on it. Do people actually put their cats on a harness and walk them around on a leash? I think my cat would hate me if I did that.

I have seen that before and it really blew me away. I must have laughed until I was blue in the face. This was simply because I don't see a cat as an animal that you take for walks. Cats don't run away if you treat them right and they usually just run free and come home for meals, rest, and to catch mice. I believe that this harness was created by a crazy person for crazy people. You Dig?

Yep, you can train a kitten to accept a collar or harness but you'd have to start early do do that.

Yes, I have heard of people putting their cats on leashes. I guess that some cats wouldn't mind, especially if you can start them on a leash pretty young so that they get used to it. Other cats would probably never accept it, no matter how many times you try. But I think that it's not a bad idea at all, if you have a cat with the right temperment. And who says that you can't take a cat on a walk with a leash the way that you do with a dog? Cats need exercise and fun as well, and you can't really take them for a walk if they aren't going to have a way to stick by your side, like a leash *laugh* I for one would love to walk down the street with my cat, if my family still had a cat. That would be fun *laugh*

Yeah, if you start when they're really young it should be a problem.

I guess it would keep the cat with you and keep it under control. But knowing how cats are, something tells me the cat would find a way to get back at you for putting him on a leash. ;-)

Older cats would but if you start them out early they'll come to accept it as part of your rules.

my grandmother's neighbor puts her cat on a leash and attaches it to her wash line so then the cat can be outside and run a little bit and not run away or go in the street. she has been doing it since the cat was a baby, so the cat was use to it.

We rarely put our cat on a leash, but sometimes we do to get him out of the house for exercise. If you train your cat a little bit at a time he/she will learn the leash can be fun! You start by putting the leash(well harness) on them and taking them to the door. and then next time outside on the steps, next time after that down the carport, and etc. sooner or later they will come to find that (if they are inside only cats) they can go outside on the harness and go for a little walk with you. my cat likes it, but gets fleas too easily, so we dont take him much.

If you teach your cat from day one to walk on a lead they will love and respect you....not only do my 3 cats like to be tethered and walked but so do my 2 bunnies.....it all depends on how they are raised

We have them for our cats and we have used them to bring them to the park and to the vet. One of our cats loves it because this means he gets to go outside. Our other cat doesn't like it, but she doesn't like anything on her but her blanket.

I've heard that if you start to train a cat when it's very young they'll do just about anything you want.

Yes, some people do it. I had a friend that walked her Siamese cat on a harness for a walk outside to do his poops. I never did with my cats, but some people do.

I'd love to train my cat to let me put a harness on her then have her poop outside but at 13 yrs old it might just be a little late for that.

They do hate it, I guess you have to train them (like a dog) to like it. I had one once for a cat of mine, I was moving across states thinking that if I put my cat on a leash they would go to the bathroom when we stopped .. guess what, cats don't do that, they actually hold it until they get their litter box back .. silly me~

Cats do what they want if you let them plus I think it's possible that if they aren't leash trained early they'll never cotton to it.

My parents cat loves to be walked! Yes, she has a pink harness and leash! They started putting both on her from the time they got her at six weeks of age. She is soooo cute prancing down the road on her little pink leash! She also jumps on the vanity in the bathroomn each morning to have her face washed, then runs to one specific spot in the kitchen afterward for her three treats. Should you try to give her an extra treat, she will leave it and walk away. That cat is so much enjoyment for my parents, they have the cat spoiled rotten! Of course, when they travel, I have to go over and do the walking and face washing. But I don't mind, she is a doll!

OMIG I acutally saw a guy taking his cat for a walk in one of those halter contraptions. It just looked ridiculous. I'm not used to seeing a cat on a leash! It might be a good way for a house cat to get some fresh air.

It's a great way to keep your cat safe from being run over.

A friend of the family had this very large black and white cat that would actually pull his harness off its' hook and take it to whomever was ready to take him for a walk. He would heel and everything. He would even sit or lie down when told to while in the harness. It was just too cute and funny. I think my cats would stick every single claw out and use me for a pincushion if I tried to put harnesses on them!

Cats, just like dogs can be trained to walk on a leash. It's safe and easy to go out with a cat that way. You can ensure they won't run off or run into traffic and everything else. People do it, it can be done, you just have to do some training.

Oh my! My cat would hate me, too, if I did that to her. She is very nice and friendly, but she even hates when I pick her up and give her a hug. lol. I'm sure she would hate a leash. I've put clothes on her before and she wasn't very fond of it, although, she doesn't mind collars at all. So, if she didn't notice that it was on she might not mind but I'd never be able to take her anywhere on it. Especially in a pet store or something. lol.

We are hoping to harness train Rain this spring. I live on a very busy three lane highway and I don't want to lose my kitty to a car. She is a very thin cat and slips out of her collar with no effort at all. I'd like to be able to train her to stay on the porch and let her enjoy being outside, but we need to start with a way that she can't get hurt...hence the harness. Also, I've read that they're actually easier on a cat than a leash and give the owner better control.
