Dreamgirls picked up eight Academy Award nominations, but failed to land the best picture category, in which the musical drama was considered a front-runner. The film Babel was close behind with seven noms, including best pictures and best supporting actress nods for newcomers Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi, although Hollywood A-lister Brad Pitt was shut out completely. Perpetual bridesmaid nominee Martin Scorsese, who has yet to win an Academy Award, picked up his sixth nomination for best director - his eight overall.
