How do referrals work?

I posted a link in a Yahoo group I belong to inviting friends to join. Four people have joined, three have posted but it says I have no referrals. When I click on the link it takes me to my profile. I've actually forgotten how I joined but I did it through my friends link. Can someone explain to this silly old lady please.

DOH! Turns out I used the wrong link. So in fact I don't have any referrals. I've since sent emails to everyone I know and no-one has joined so ... I guess that's it. LOL
