The money used in Second Life is called linden dollars, which can be exchanged for real money, so the answer is yes. I joined SL 4 1/2 months ago and I have made the equivalent of several hundred dollars in profit, mainly from playing games, working and selling land. There are people on SL who earn a living from it, this isn't as difficult as it sounds. I work on there, reading tarot cards, and there's really no limit to what you can do to make money. If you have a talent, set it to work for you. You can do anything from selling paintings you've created in real life to designing clothes or houses within Second Life and selling those. You can teach, you can dance, you can be a dee-jay, an escort ... ANYTHING. I have never in my life found anything I enjoy more that I actually earn money from, apart from my work as a writer and I think maybe SL even beats that, insofar as I can earn money from writing on there as well. One of the first bits of money I made was by winning second prize in a writing contest. Hope that answers your question!
