What do you think of about using a threat to make people work hard or obey?

I find that intimidation and fear will actually make people less likely to work hard. There will be resentment and anger, and they will constantly be afraid of making mistakes, which could actually lead to mistakes. I find that people work better in a situation where they are led with respect; a boss who works "with" his employees instead of "above" them gains more respect and cooperation. He doesn't have to be "friends" with the employees, but the boss needs to be able to see things from their perspective. And it always helps to explain to people why something is being asked of them; explain the rationale and the importance so that they "buy into it" .
